make can't handle directory names with spaces

In installing ALF make throws out an error, apparently caused by a directory name with the space character in it:

fortran -c -o Predefined_Latt_mod.o -cpp -O3 -ffree-line-length-none -ffast-math -I/home/stafusa/TEMP/ALF Projects/project 0/ALF/Libraries/Modules ../Prog/Predefined_Latt_mod.F90
gfortran: error: Projects/project: No such file or directory
gfortran: error: 0/ALF/Libraries/Modules: No such file or directory

This was pointed out by a participant of the ALF Workshop 2022.

From a cursory search, it appears to be an old and known bug (feature?) of make that directory names with spaces aren't supported (see, e.g., issue and suggested solutions here: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/9838384/can-gnu-make-handle-filenames-with-spaces).
